early years

Born in Canterbury, England, Orlando moved to London at the age of 16 where he joined the National Youth Theatre for two seasons and subsequently gained a scholarship to train with the British American Drama Academy. Upon completion of his scholarship, Bloom played the lead in the production of A Walk in the Vienna Woods. He made his first film debut in Wilde (1997), based on the biopic of Irish playwright Oscar Wilde. He was then accepted to London’s Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where he chose to put his screen career on hold for the opportunity to further his acting education. During his time at Guildhall, Orlando performed in a number of productions including, Little Me, A Month in the City, Peer Gynt, Mephisto, Twelfth Night and The Seagull. Just days before he was due to graduate in 1999, he was cast as Legolas, in The Lord Of The Rings movies.

career history

Orlando’s earliest roles were in television – Casualty (1986), Midsommer Murders (1997) and Smack The Pony (1999). It was in 1999, when Peter Jackson saw Orlando on stage at Guildhall and asked him he would like to screen test for a part in the Lord Of The Rings films. Following his work on The Lord Of The Rings, Orlando has done varied portrayals starring in Ridley Scott’s realistic combat movie, Black Hawk Down (2001) – followed by a succession of high profile appearances including the romantic, swashbuckling secondary lead, Will Turner, in Disney’s high seas adventure, Pirates Of The Caribbean (2003) and as Paris, in Wolfgang Petersen’s Grecian adventure, Troy (2004). Other roles have included the endearing British comedy, The Calcium Kid (2004), and as Joe Byrne, in Gregor Jordan’s drama based on Australia’s notorious outlaw, Ned Kelly (2003). Additionally, he starred and co–produced in Frank E. Flower’s independent crime drama, Haven (2004). During 2005, Orlando played diverse characters in Ridley Scott’s magnificent knight epic, Kingdom Of Heaven and Cameron Crowe’s bittersweet romance, Elizabethtown. Recently, Orlando reprised his role as the noble pirate, Will Turner for the second and third movies in the Pirates Of The Caribbean franchise – Dead Man’s Chest (2006) and At World’s End (2007).
